Verse of the Day

Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. (Philippians 2:3, ESV)

Retirement, Transition, and Our Parish

September 11, 2008

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

By now we are aware that Father Jerry is retiring.  Our emotions range from being sad for our loss to being happy that he and Joy can begin their next big adventure.  We were so fortunate to have their loving presence for the past 24 years.  With Father Jerry’s leave taking, the parish will enter a time of reflection and self study.

In the absence of a rector, the vestry is charged with the responsibilities of the Church, including but not limited to, finances, the physical plant, creating and charging a search committee, providing for on-going pastoral care and maintaining regular communications with the congregation and the Diocese.  Please know that we have already begun the process of planning for this transition and will do all we can to maintain the unique character of the Church of the Messiah.

Our first important responsibility during this time will be to celebrate Father Jerry’s ministry.  Plans are being made for multiple celebrations, and you can sure that dancing will be included.  We will keep you informed (and ask for your help) as the plans develop.

Before we can begin the important task of the self study phase of this transition, the Vestry must create and charge an independent committee to conduct the self study and create the parish profile that will be the cornerstone of our search for a new rector.  The work of this committee will require a significant commitment of time over the course of the next year or longer.  Kris Perry has been asked by the Vestry and has agreed to serve as chair of this committee.  We’re very fortunate to have someone as hard working and talented as Kris to serve as chair.  If you are interested in serving as a member of this committee please write a brief letter to Ron Hirsch or Dave Kraft (our wardens) by the end of September and include why you want to serve on this committee and what skills you could bring to it.  We are looking to create a committee of 9 people, with no more than 3 from the Vestry.  It is our intention to have this committee represent the diversity of the parish members.

Transitions can be both difficult and energizing.  Please read the weekly bulletin as most news and information will appear there first.  The web site will be updated to include information concerning the self study and parish profile (www.rhinebeck-episcopal.org).  We all may be called upon to do a little more during this time.  Please be a participant in the process.  Feel free to speak to any Vestry member if you have any concerns.  We ask for your prayers and thank you in advance for your patience.

Yours in Christ,
Ron Hirsch, Warden
David Kraft, Warden
On behalf of the Vestry
