Mark you calendars for July 26th -30th for an exciting VBS week. The program is “Egypt…. Joseph’s Journey from Prison to Palace.” It will be tons of fun as we’ll be setting up a marketplace with lots of shops, making crafts and costumes, singing and being part of Bible stories. The Third Lutheran Church will be the host church with Rhinebeck Reformed and Messiah co-hosting. This is a community Vacation Bible School and all are welcome. We need lots of teen and adult volunteers. We are still in the organization stage, so watch for news on specific ways you might like to get involved. Parents, this is a great opportunity to share a special week with the kids in our community, our home church and your own children. Currently we are in need of ‘E-Z Up” canopies or tents to create our marketplace. If you have one we can borrow for the week, please call Laurie Craft at 229-5681. March 7 is Girl Scout Sunday. We welcome Girl Scouts of all ages, past and present. Our Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held following the l0:00 am Easter Service in the Parish Hall Yard. Thanks to the generous donation of plastic Easter eggs from Michael and Kelly Torrcello we will only be asking for individually wrapped candy. Please drop off candy in the Parish Hall during Coffee Hour or in basket designated Easter Candy in the Narthex by Palm Sunday. Thanks for your continued support of this yearly event. Hope you are all enjoying your Lenten journey. —Rebecca Recchia In the Diocese we have a wonderful resource! We have a 700 acre camp called Incarnation with a pristine mile long lake. The activities and the leadership at the Camp are on a par with private camps costing 3 times what Incarnation charges because the camp is sponsored by generous churches in the Diocese. Incarnation is a values oriented camp, which makes chapel and grace at mealtimes an integral part of the fun. Of course the 100 foot water slide and the 60 animals on the farm continue to be wildly popular. The separate teen-age camp (Pioneer Village) has been celebrated in the New York Times by long-time camp alumni David Brooks. Incarnation is the oldest co-ed camp in the country, and it is only 2 hours from Manhattan. We encourage all church families to review the camp’s web-site (www.incarnationcamp.org) or pay a visit to Incarnation. Call 860-767-0848 for an appointment or to speak to Camp Director Karen Fairbairn.

Registration forms for the festival are available on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall. Thanks to all you angels who have given so generously. We will have a new project or two soon. The Rev. Canon Andrew Dietsche, Canon for Pastoral Care, Diocese of New York, will present a Lenten Program at Christ Church, Pok, on Wed., Feb. 10th, 7:00-8:30 pm. “…before the current prayer book, the three Sundays before Ash Wednesday were called Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima, and together formed a small season referred to as ‘Pre-Lent,’ or ‘Shrovetide.’…purpose was for the Christian to be given time…to compose him or herself in anticipation of the Ash Wednesday fast and the weeks of making ready for Easter. Thus for many Christians, the experience of Ash Wednesday can be of being thrust suddenly into language and liturgy of deep confession and sorrow, or guilt and shame, without psychological readiness for it…For that reason the Mid-Hudson Lenten reflection for this year is schedules for the week before Lent begins, …to help us to quiet ourselves and ready ourselves for the spiritual accountability which the church will ask of us on Ash Wednesday….” There is no charge for this program, but the diocese need an idea of how many people will be attending so they may prepare. Please let Su (876-2533) know by 10:00 AM Monday morning, Feb. 8th if you will be attending so she can pass the numbers on to the diocese. Thank you. The Outreach Committee met on January 24 to review applications from the congregation for funds from the Mad Dash. Seven projects were accepted and will be recommended to the Vestry for approval at the February meeting. After the Vestry meets, the Committee will publish the list of projects and amounts. The Church has a lovely nursery that is open every Sunday during the 10am service. My name is Sabrina and I am the care giver. I am 20 yrs old (21 come this May) and have been doing the nursery for several years. I have in the past had several little ones (at one time) to care for and keep busy while Mommy and Daddy enjoy some quiet time at service. All my little ones that I have had in the past are growing up and moving on to Sunday school, so there is plenty of room for new little ones. This is just to let you know I am still here for you. The nursery is open even when there is no Sunday school. I only have 1 or 2 little ones at a time now and just want parents to know that the nursery is still functioning and all newborns and toddlers are welcomed. I have many toys and books for them, a crib for the tiny ones and a lovely rocker. Moms and Dads are welcomed to visit the nursery any Sunday and even stay for a bit with their children if they like. Stop by and say hello… Peace, Sabrina Keto
Dutchess County Interfaith Council presents: Interfaith Prayer Vigil for Haiti
Come join the interfaith community for a candlelight vigil followed by shared multi-faith prayers, silent meditation, song & fellowship in the chaple. Information will be available for those interested in making a donation to the Haiti relief efforts. For directions, click here.
Donegan Hall 8:00-9:00 pm We have all seen the devastation done in Haiti. This message from our Bishop best reflects our thoughts and prayers. If you would like to make a contribution, the Bishop’s recommendations are below. You may send donations direct or place them in the collection plate and we will send them out. Special Offering envelopes are available on the Memorial Altar and in the Parish Hall for this purpose. Please DO NOT make checks payable to Messiah. The diocese has warned us that there are fraudulent emails circulating from someone purporting to be Bishop Jean Zache Duracin. Canon Robertson suggests the safer way to donate is through Episcopal Relief and Development (below) or through an organization that you are absolutely certain is who they claim to be. The Earthquake in Haiti: A Message from Bishop Sisk January 13, 2010 For any community an earthquake as devastating as the one that struck Haiti on January 12 would be a disaster on a massive scale. For the people of Haiti, already struggling with a level of poverty incomprehensible to most of us in the United States, it is truly catastrophic. I urge you to join with me in prayer for the dead and the injured, for those in Haiti who survive amid ruins, and for our Haitians brothers and sisters here in the Diocese of New York, who have loved ones at home. I urge you also to contribute in a practical way by sending donations to help the people of Haiti either through the Diocese or through Episcopal Relief and Development. Faithfully yours, • Donations through the Episcopal Diocese of New York: The Episcopal Diocese of New York Make a credit card donation online [at http://www.dioceseny.org/payment_form] and type “Haiti Relief” in the description box. • Donations through Episcopal Relief and Development: Mount St. Alphonsus, located in the Hudson Valley in New York State, and one of the largest retreat centers in the world, announces its upcoming programs:

Nehemiah 8 1-3, 5-6, 8-10 Lessons and readings for past and future weeks may be found on The Lectionary Page. The annual meeting will be held next Sunday, January 24th after the 10:00 service. Bring a covered dish to share, hear the State of the Church reports, vote for vestry members, and enjoy fellowship. Who May Vote at Messiah? All persons from 18 years of age, who have been baptized and have been regular attendees at its worship and who pledged to its support for at least twelve months.
The Church of the Messiah is rich with opportunities for participation in a wide range of activities. As is the case in a lot of organizations, many of these activities have become dependent on the work of only a few people. This situation raises questions about the sustainability and possibilities for growth of these activities. How can new people be attracted to participate in a project? How can they be nurtured, trained and retained? What stands in the way of helping more people be involved? How can the benefits of contributing to an activity be communicated? In this half-day workshop (12:30 to 5 p.m. on January 30), we will review some concepts of “recruitment and retention;” discuss how those concepts apply to Messiah and begin to make a plan for sustainability for each activity represented in the group. All current committee members (i.e. Sunday School, Homeless Shelter, Sister City Project, Movie Night et.al.) are invited to attend. Interested? Please call Ron Hirsch at 876-7802 to get more information. Lunch provided!! Please note that all contributions received in the office by December 31st will be included on your final 2009 giving statement. According to IRS rules, a contribution received January 1st or later, even though it is dated 2009, must be considered a contribution in the year 2010. Final 2009 Giving Statements will be mailed toward the end of January. Thank you. We have received 35 applications and a number of inquiries from across the United States and even beyond. We anticipate beginning visitations and interviewing for the rector’s position in mid-February. The Outreach Committee will meet after the Annual Meeting next Sunday, January 24th to review applications for outreach funds. If you haven’t yet made an application, there are some in the narthex. Any questions, call Pam Wright at 266-4381.
We have all seen the devastation done in Haiti. This message from our Bishop best reflects our thoughts and prayers. The profile describes our church, who we are, where we want to be, and perhaps most importantly, what we are looking for in a new rector. It is the “want ad” that introduces our parish to “candidates.” The profile was based on your input, the surveys, and the World Cafe sessions. We have received 35 applications and a number of inquiries from across the United States and even beyond. We will continue to accept applications for the rector’s position until mid-January. There are 210 parishes in the New York Diocese and we are number 51 in income. By this measure we are a wealthy church, and yet our operating budget historically runs in the red. This year we have a balanced budget for the first time in more than 25 years, due to having a part-time Rector and a reduction in our Diocesan Assessment. In order to have a full-time priest and a balanced budget, we will need to increase our income by more than 15% in 2010. As we come closer to the Annual Meeting on the 24th of January, please help us to reach our goal on pledging for 2010. Our goal is to extend our pledge families to 150. Remember the readings from Mark, no amount is too small. Please participate.
We will be having a pot luck luncheon at the annual meeting which will follow the 10:00 o’clock service, this Sunday, January 24th. Kris Perry, who heads the Messiah search committee, will report on the search process. In addition, Francois Weigel will present the annual budget. There will be an election of new vestry. Bring a covered dish to share, hear the State of the Church reports, vote for vestry members, and enjoy fellowship. |
