Christmas Outreach for Rural & Migrant Ministries

For the past few years, we have collected gifts for the residents of the Anderson School for Autism. The school receives many donations at Christmas, so the Outreach Committee would like us to collect gifts for the Rural & Migrant Ministries (RMM) this year. RMM is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Each year, the Daughters of Sarah, a women’s support group sponsored by RMM, runs a Christmas Store. “The Store provides an opportunity for those who are experiencing economic hardship to purchase, at a reduced cost, Christmas gifts for their children…By shopping at the Christmas Store, parents are able to choose the gifts they know their children want while allowing them to maintain their dignity by purchasing and giving the gifts directly.

Gifts must be new, unwrapped, and have the original price tag attached. These items will be sold at 50-70% off the tag price. All proceeds support the outreach programs of the Daughters of Sarah. If you would like to participate, please bring your gift(s) to church or the parish office no later than Sunday, December 4th.

Outreach Program Needs Your Help

The Outreach Committee is organizing a workday at the Northern Dutchess Day Care Center on Mt. Rutsen Road. Child daycare at this not-for-profit organization is available to all children and this event is an important ministry of the Outreach Committee. On Sat., Nov. 12 from 9:00 am-3:00 pm, and/or on Sun., Nov. 13 from 1:00-3:00 pm, the committee needs your help painting and laying a new rug at the center. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to lend a hand, please speak with Leslie Weichsel or Joann Clark.

A Warmer Winter: Coats Are Coming

Early in November Messiah will be receiving about one hundred coats and jackets, in all sizes, shapes and colors, for distribution to the wider community. This valuable outreach opportunity arose after careful consultation between our own Outreach Committee and leaders of Poughkeepsie’s Dutchess Outreach Coat Drive, who have now chosen Messiah as their primary coat distribution point for the general Rhinebeck area. Special thanks are due to Clarence Clark, who initiated our cooperation with the Coat Drive effort both last year and this. During November the Outreach Committee will be exploring ways in which the coats can serve to enhance our various outreach ministries through our efforts at Wells Manor, with the ESL program, and Northern Dutchess Day Care, as well as others. As always, our goal will be to reach out to those who might too easily be forgotten, and we seek the congregation’s help in that effort. Please share your ideas, and spread the word that the coats are coming! They will be available for children, women, and men with a special emphasis on kids’ winter jackets because they are always so quickly outgrown. Our pantry will stay open for extended hours (10:00 am to 5:30 pm) on Friday, Nov. 11 specifically for coat distribution, and we will continue to give coats away the following Friday during regular hours (10:00-1:00). Coats will also be easily available after church services on Nov. 13th. Anyone who finds our regular pantry hours difficult, either during the coat drive or thereafter, should call Betty Mensch (516-4224) to arrange individually for a different time or for help with delivery. Nobody should hesitate to come or call.

Men’s Spirituality Book Group

We have formed a men’s book group on spiritualty on Wed. evenings at 7:30 pm in Donegan Hall. The group is open to the wider community as well as members of Messiah. For more information, please speak with Fr. Richard.

Induction of James Baldwin into the American Poets’ Corner at St. John the Divine

Induction of James Baldwin into the American Poets’ Corner

Sunday Nov 6 at the 4 p.m. service;

Celebration Monday Nov 7 at 7 p.m.

James BaldwinThe Cathedral is proud to announce that James Arthur Baldwin has been elected, by unanimous vote, to be the 2011 inductee into the American Poets’ Corner at the Cathedral. The board is led by Marilyn Nelson, the Cathedral’s Poet in Residence.

James Baldwin (1924 – 1987) was born in Harlem and was noted for his novels on sexual and personal identity, and his sharp essays on civil-rights struggles in the United States. He gained fame in 1953 with his first novel, Go Tell it on the Mountain, a story of hidden sins, guilt, and religious torments. In this and subsequent works Baldwin fused autobiographical material with analysis of social injustice and prejudices.

The formal induction will take place on Sunday, November 6th at a 4:00 Service. A celebration of James Baldwin and his work is scheduled to take place at the Cathedral the evening of Monday, November 7th.

The American Poet’s Corner, created in 1984 to memorialize and celebrate American writers, is modeled after a similar alcove at Westminster Abbey in London. Past inductees include Emily Dickinson, E.E. Cummings and last year’s honoree, Sylvia Plath.

About the American Poets’ Corner and the Cathedral

The American Poet’s Corner at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and Cathedral poetry events have become an integral part of the literary landscape in New York. Visitors come to the American Poet’s Corner, located in the Arts Bay on the north side of the nave, to remember the authors they’ve long loved, and to see who else is honored, whom they may have not read. Poets, fiction writers, essayists, and dramatists: the American Poet’s Corner memorializes the literature of our nation in all its surprise, wit and beauty. The American Poet’s Corner has earned respect for its choices of inductees, and by the high quality of its Electors and Poets in Residence, which include 17 U.S. Poets Laureate and winners of every literary prize an American writer can aspire to, including the Nobel.

A Contribution of $10.00 will be appreciated; reservations are not required.

NO Church School Today (10/30/11)

We’ve just been informed that Duchess County has declared a state of emergency, and are encouraging only essential vehicles to be on the roads. Therefore we will not be holding Church School tomorrow. We will still hold Sunday services at 8am and 10am if you would like to attend, but please err on the side of caution and stay safe!

As always, if you have any questions, you can contact me in the rectory at (845) 876-2620. If you want to remove yourself from any of these email groups, or add yourself to other Messiah groups, you can click on the “Update Profile” link at the bottom of this email. Thank you for your service to Church of the Messiah.

Yours in Faith,
Father Richard

“Education Under Siege: Race, Poverty, and the Mania of Testing in our Public Schools”
Jonathan Kozol; Elaine Lipschutz Bi-annual Lecture; Thursday, November 3, 5:30pm, Vassar Chapel

Jonathan Kozol gave up the prospect of a promising and secure career within the academic world, moved from Harvard Square into a poor black neighborhood of Boston, and became a fourth grade teacher. He has gone on to devote nearly half-a-century to the increasingly complex and urgent issues facing public education and to the challenge of providing equal opportunity within our public schools to every child, of whatever racial origin or economic level.
