Father Richard is home with a virus, and won’t be doing services this Sunday, Jan. 22–many thanks to The Rev. Fred Drobin for taking his place at the 8 am and 10 am services.
However, our annual meeting has been rescheduled for next week–we will gather after the 10 am service in the Parish Hall on Sunday, January 29, for the meeting, election, and potluck!
Father Richard will be back in the office by Wednesday.
The Coalition for Rhinebeck Youth, in collaboration with the Rhinebeck PTSO and Red Hook PTSA, Encourages all Families – Parents & Students 7th Grade & Up—to attend a screening of the documentary Race to Nowhere, examining the dark side of America’s achievement culture. The film is not available online or by rental, so if you’ve been wanting to see it, now is your chance. We are able to offer free tickets thanks to the generosity of the Church of the Messiah.
The Washington Post describes it as An Education Film that Gets It…Raises Questions About How to Raise Well-Adjusted Children…, the New York Times calls it A Must See Movie…
We’re showing the film to ignite discussion and raise questions about how we, as parents and teachers, can inspire a love of learning, create environments that increase young people’s feelings of confidence, and convey respect for the “whole child”.
With increasing numbers of students nation-wide being treated for stress related illnesses and taking “study drugs” such as Adderall to help juggle the many commitments, it seems worthwhile to examine a potential downside, as the New York Times put it, “of childhoods spent on resume-building”.
We hope you’ll join us, and stay for the panel discussion following the film. Panelists include: RHS Student, Vassar College Student, Bard College Admissions Officer, Red Hook MS Principal, CLS Teacher, Pediatrician, and Therapist.
Visit www.rhinebeckyouth.org to reserve your seat. Visit www.racetonowhere for more information about the film.

Any teenaged girl (or mature preteen) is welcome to attend; she does not need to belong to the parish or be a member of the Episcopal Church. Gannett House, the family homeless shelter run by Hudson River Housing, is the recipient of the December Third Thursday Lunch. We hope you will come and enjoy a delicious lunch of soup, sandwich, and homemade dessert and support this very worthy recipient. It is difficult to be homeless at any time of year, but the Holiday Season is particularly hard, especially for families. Gannett House could especially use donations of soap, toiletries, shaving supplies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, towels, washcloths and sheets, so please feel free to bring any of those items along with you– and of couse, bring your friends!
The cost of the meal is $6.00 and take out is available for $7.00 by calling 876-3533 to place your order between 10:00 am and 12:30 pm.

There will be no youth confirmation class this Wednesday night 11/27. Class will resume in Donegan Hall on Wed., Dec. 7, from 6:30-7:20 pm.

For the past few years, we have collected gifts for the residents of the Anderson School for Autism. The school receives many donations at Christmas, so the Outreach Committee would like us to collect gifts for the Rural & Migrant Ministries (RMM) this year. RMM is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Each year, the Daughters of Sarah, a women’s support group sponsored by RMM, runs a Christmas Store. “The Store provides an opportunity for those who are experiencing economic hardship to purchase, at a reduced cost, Christmas gifts for their children…By shopping at the Christmas Store, parents are able to choose the gifts they know their children want while allowing them to maintain their dignity by purchasing and giving the gifts directly.
Gifts must be new, unwrapped, and have the original price tag attached. These items will be sold at 50-70% off the tag price. All proceeds support the outreach programs of the Daughters of Sarah. If you would like to participate, please bring your gift(s) to church or the parish office no later than Sunday, December 4th.
A traditional service of Advent Lessons and Carols will be held at Messiah on Sunday, Dec. 11th at 4:00 pm. Please join us for a wonderful way to celebrate the season. A potluck supper will follow the service and there will be entertainment.
