Rector’s Discretionary Fund

On the first Sunday of each month, the loose cash in the collection plate is used for the Rector’s Discretionary Fund that supports confidential pastoral needs within our parish. There are also envelopes on the table in the Narthex if you would like to make a contribution this Sunday or at any time.

A reading of parishioner Rosary O’Neill’s new play “Plane Love,” inspired by the love story of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, will be held at the National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South, NYC on Mon., Feb. 27, 2012 at 7:00 pm in the Sculpture Court. A reception will follow. All are welcome to attend.

Tyler Jeck’s graduation date from military boot camp is February 23rd. Mail is his only communication with the regular world. The outreach committee has decided to invite 7 parishioners to take on a ministry of writing to Tyler each day of the week through February 23rd. A schedule will be posted at church for sign up, or you can express your interest in participating by email to Fr. Richard. There are a few simple requirements. No writing is allowed on outside of envelope except the recipient address and return address. Only a card or letter can be sent, no packages or gifts. The outreach committee is considering expanding this ministry so that we can reach out and keep in touch with parishioners and their families who are facing challenging situations.

Surviving Caregiving

The Outreach Committee has given the go-ahead for the creation of a Caregivers Support Program for those who are currently caring for someone or have done so in the past. We have been granted the use of Donegan Hall on Mondays and hope to offer two meetings every week on that day—one during the day and one during the evening. On Sunday, Feb. 19th, there will be a Q&A meeting after both the 8:00 and 10:00 services when we will brainstorm and listen and determine what the caregivers themselves need to get through this challenging time of their lives with a measure of grace and serenity. All parishioners are invited to join us in these exploratory meetings to contribute to the creation of this program at Messiah.

Confirmation (3/11/12)

Confirmation at Messiah has been scheduled for March 11, 2012. The new Bishop Coadjutor, Andrew Dietsche, has been able to schedule his first visitation as a newly consecrated bishop here at Messiah the day after his consecration. Save the date. The Episcopal New Yorker newspaper incorrectly identified the bishop visiting Messiah for confirmation March 11th. It will be Bishop-elect Andrew Dietsche. For those unable to attend our confirmation at Messiah, Fr. Richard will be taking members of our church to the Diocesan Confirmation at the Cathedral on May 26, 2012.

Father Richard is home with a virus, and won’t be doing services this Sunday, Jan. 22–many thanks to The Rev. Fred Drobin for taking his place at the 8 am and 10 am services.

However, our annual meeting has been rescheduled for next week–we will gather after the 10 am service in the Parish Hall on Sunday, January 29, for the meeting, election, and potluck!

Father Richard will be back in the office by Wednesday.

Women’s Writing Group

The Women’s Writing Group has also begun again. This group will meet once a month on the dates listed below from 3:00-5:00 pm in Donegan Hall. Each meeting will start with a brief reading from an Episcopal women writer, followed by a writing prompt, writing time and then sharing of our work. All types/levels of women writers (or non-writers) are welcome! If you are interested, please contact either Pam Wright at for more details. Feb. 5th, Mar. 11th, Apr. 15th, May 20th, June 10th.

Girls’ Writing & Poetry Group

The Girls Writing Group has begun again. The group will meet at 11:30 am approximately every other Sunday in Donegan Hall. Any teenaged girl (or mature preteen) is welcome to attend; she does not need to belong to the parish or be a member of the Episcopal Church. The goal of this group is to help the girls express themselves through writing in a trusting environment. Girls do not have to attend all the sessions; they are welcome to come anytime. The group will meet through the end of the school year on the following dates: 1/22, 2/5, 2/15, 2/26, 3/11, 3/25, 4/15, 4/29, 5/13, 5/20, 6/3, 6/24. The Coalition for Rhinebeck Youth, in collaboration with the Rhinebeck PTSO and Red Hook PTSA, Encourages all Families – Parents & Students 7th Grade & Up—to attend a screening of the documentary Race to Nowhere, examining the dark side of America’s achievement culture. The film is not available online or by rental, so if you’ve been wanting to see it, now is your chance. We are able to offer free tickets thanks to the generosity of the Church of the Messiah.

The Washington Post describes it as An Education Film that Gets It…Raises Questions About How to Raise Well-Adjusted Children…, the New York Times calls it A Must See Movie…

We’re showing the film to ignite discussion and raise questions about how we, as parents and teachers, can inspire a love of learning, create environments that increase young people’s feelings of confidence, and convey respect for the “whole child”.

With increasing numbers of students nation-wide being treated for stress related illnesses and taking “study drugs” such as Adderall to help juggle the many commitments, it seems worthwhile to examine a potential downside, as the New York Times put it, “of childhoods spent on resume-building”.

We hope you’ll join us, and stay for the panel discussion following the film. Panelists include: RHS Student, Vassar College Student, Bard College Admissions Officer, Red Hook MS Principal, CLS Teacher, Pediatrician, and Therapist.

The Children’s Home of Kingston is a non-sectarian, multi-service agency serving the needs of youth, ages 8 to 21, who are experiencing difficulty at home, in school, or in their community. The agency has five residential cottages, a group home, a supervised independent living program, and an approved special-education school that is located on the main campus. Through a person and family-centered approach, interdisciplinary treatment teams work with the youth and their families to achieve positive outcomes. Our mission is to provide a safe, healthy, supportive, educational, and therapeutic environment for youth and families to strengthen their ability to make positive choices.
